To succeed as a woman she had to become a man.

BARRY

Frederic Mohr
Directed by John Carnegie
Designed by Gregory Smith

In the early nineteenth century, a young girl on holiday in the Borders vows to become a doctor.
This is the story how she became MAJOR GENERAL JAMES MIRANDA BARRY
Inspector General of Hospitals of the British Army

To fashionable Cape Town society, Barry was "the perfect gentleman."
To Florence Nightingale, Barry was "the most hardened creature I ever met throughout the Army"
To the charwoman who laid out the General's body for burial, Barry was "the devil a General! Its a woman - and a woman who has had a child!"
"A fine piece of theatre" Times Educational Supplement
"One of the most astonishing stories in the history of sexual politics," The Guardian
Frederic Mohr's fascinating play premiered in the USA to enormous acclaim in 1983 and was then produced by the Traverse Theatre. This 25th Anniversary revival brings director John Carnegie and actress Isabella Jarrett together again after their success in Hermiston, and renews an author/director partnership whose previous collaborations include the Fringe First Award winning Bozzy and The Admiral Jones.

Adapted and directed by Gerry Mulgrew

from the novel by Robin Jenkins.

Following the critical acclaim of Communicado's adaptation of Jenkins's The Cone Gatherers, Fergus Lamont promises once again to bring to life the work of one of Scotland's finest writers. In a story rife with scathing Scots humour, Jenkins introduces us to Fergus, a man at odds with his own identity. Despite a childhood in the slums, he learns of his nobel connections and is determined to join the aristocracy, claiming his rightful place in Scottish society. This journey of self discovery takes Fergus to the trenches in World War I, an Edinburgh country home and a weather beaten outpost in the Outer Hebrides before returning to his birthplace. In this adaptation of Robin Jenkins's most searching exploration of the modern psyche, Communicado creates not just an unforgetable character but an image of Scotland and what it is to be Scots.
